No. The answer is not obvious…not these days any way.

I’m going to explain why it’s not obvious, then you can decide for yourself, sound fair?

First I just want to start by clearly stating that I am talking about getting rich today. If you are uncomfortable about talking or even thinking about getting and being rich, then maybe this website isn’t for you.

You see we feel that, IF you are getting rich by providing value and service to the World, then it’s deserved and everybody wins! We have no problem helping people get rich!

So let’s get on with today’s conundrum….

…Who’s ‘Richer’? The £50k Man Or The £100k Man?

Lets lay some foundations.

If this blog was written in a magazine about 30 or 40 years ago there would probably be one easy answer to the question because of the resources people had available to them back then.

Generally to get money, people had to trade in their time. This is called having a job

So pretty much their only resource was their time. They put in time, they got money out.

Times have (thankfully) changed….drastically!

Whether you like it or not, technology can now actually become your best resource for getting money. What are we really talking about here?

The £100k Man

The £100k man in this example is going to be based on your standard corporate guy.

He’s working for a large, successful organisation. He has worked his way up the ‘ladder’. He studied at University for years to get the chance to join that ladder on the bottom step.

But now, he’s up there right? He’s earning the big bucks!

Hang on though….would you say he’s made it?

Lets analyze:

- £100k per year coming in to his family – CHECK

- Well respect professional – CHECK

- Beautiful home with wife, kids and dog – CHECK

- 2 weeks of expensive vacation per year to look forward to – CHECK

- Always there to pick his kids up from school, watch them do sports, plays, and everything else kids do – CHE….oh, hang on…something is not quite right on this one…NO CHECK

- Free to spend quality time with his wife on various ‘date nights’ and generally enjoying and nurturing their relationships – NO CHECK

- Enjoys hours on his favourite hobbies AND tries new things regularly -  NO CHECK

- Is in peak physical shape due to a healthy relaxing lifestyle because he earns £1ook per year and can do what he wants – NO CHECK

WHY is this now looking so awful?

ANSWER: He is spending a minimum of 80 hours per week in his job, stressed out of his mind, pressure that’s causing stomach ulcers and burning out faster than you can say “Realise this sucks and quit already!!“

Is this man rich?

In monetary terms…I suppose he is classed as rich…although he is trading each hour worked for a measly £19.23 an hour.

But being rich isn’t just about money is it…

The £50k Man

The £50k is based on your standard internet entrepreneur who has made the wise decision to leverage the internet.

He started off similar to the £100k man in a job, but quickly realised that it sucked not actually owning your own life.

He invested some time and money into building a website that earned him money and he could run from anywhere, as long as he has his laptop and an internet connection.

The website started small and with a little elbow grease got to £50k per year profit, so he thought “stuff this, I’m quitting my job TODAY!”

Lets analyse his new life to see if he is now rich:

WOW. A lot of people are now very jealous of ‘£50k Man’. Even though he earns half of what £100k Man gets…or does he?

Here’s the thing;

“People buy people”

There are a million different workout DVD’s on the market, from Davina McCall to Kat from Eastenders (No I don’t watch it before you ask!)…. So why do you think people buy them? Surely the Jane Fonda DVD from the 80′s will still do the job?? It’s because we are programmed cleverly through all forms of media to aspire to the crazy world of celebrity.. so when they say buy… WE BUY!!!

Take the “Salton Inc Griller” for example. Ever heard of it? If you have then your knowledge of American Cooking appliances is slightly weird if I’m honest!! (Sorry)

You won’t have heard of it because at the time, they were a company with a unique Grill, selling around 40 units a year (At best). It was only until they formed an unlikely partnership with a recently failed boxer that things took a dramtic turn for the better! That boxer was none other than George Foreman and the product became the “Foreman Grill”

NOW YOU’VE HEARD OF IT!!

It’s a partnership that quite simply, shouldn’t have worked… but work it did…

The joining of erm.. errr… Forces resulted in sales of over 100 MILLION units. Infact, it went so well that it actually went wrong!!

To get George on board with the promotion, Salton Inc agreed to pay him a staggering 40% of EVERY unit sold! For George this was fantastic because he was bringing in $4.5 Million a month and earned over $200 Million out of it!! It got so crazy that Salton Inc ended up buying him out for $137 Million!!!!

Taking away the mistakes that were made by the company, it quite literally revolutionised what they were doing and turned them into a force to be reckoned with!

So why am I discussing the finer points of Celebrity endorsement!?

Because when it comes to your Digital Business, the power of Celebrity can be used to give you the head start you need.

A prime example of this was a pupil who arrived at Webolutionise Towers for a catch up late last week. Andy runs a series of Affiliate websites in and around the public speaking niche. He was extremely confused because, in his own words;

There are several steps budding business owners can take to get in front of prospective investors and to help make sure they pony over the cash you need, says Asheesh Advani, author and co-founder of CircleLending, a peer-to-peer lending service that was acquired by Virgin Money USA in 2007. He now serves as CEO of asset management services company Covestor.

Here are Advani’s best tips for landing the money you’ll need to get your business off the ground:

Know the different types of investors. There are three types of people who might invest their money in your business idea: friendly investors, hobby angels and professional investors. Friendly investors are the people you know personally, namely friends and family. Hobby angels are individual investors who are most likely professionals themselves who have some money to spare. Professional investors, of course, include venture capitalists, angels and banks. “Professional investors care most about the economics of your business,” Advani says. “Whether they understand your business or not, they’re required to consider your business idea, as well as countless others.”

Make a list of prospects. Scour your industry and your professional network to put together a first group of people and test your business pitch, he says. If the people in this initial group appear to be interested, expand your list of prospects from there.

“When I started my businesses, I wound up raising money from 75 different investors,” Advani says. “Not because I wanted to. I needed to.”

He suggests keeping track of your contacts, your meetings and your goals for each of the meetings. Keep in touch with the contacts throughout the pitching process.

Set a closing date. Determine a specific, official date for when interested professional investors need to get you the money they promised — and hold them to it. When dealing with friendly and hobby angels, Advani suggests a “rolling closing date,” meaning that you’ll accept the investment money as soon as they’re willing to give it. Also, be sure to be clear with friendly investors about what happens if the money they invest isn’t paid back on time or at all.

“These are people who are close to you, so do everything you can to maintain a good relationship,” Advani says.

Use middle men carefully. Third-party groups can be great for two things, Advani says. They can help connect entrepreneurs to individual investors they didn’t otherwise know. Examples include peer lending and investing sites Lending Club and Prosper.

Crowd funding sites are another option. These services — including Pro Founder and Peerbackers – can help entrepreneurs collect numerous investments from people via social networks.

But be careful about sharing your business idea online, Advani warns. “Before you post a profile on any of these sites, remember that everyone will know what you’re planning to do,” he says.

The standard components of an effective marketing plan can vary depending on who you ask. Here is my recommended five-step process for developing a marketing plan that will help you achieve your goals for business growth.

Step One: Look inward.
Think of your company as if it were a person with its own unique personality and identity. With that in mind, create separate lists that identify your business’s strengths, weaknesses and goals. Put everything down and create big lists. Don’t edit or reject anything.

Then, find priorities among the bullet points. If you’ve done this right, you’ll have more than you can use, and some more important than others. Kick some of the less important bullets off the list and move the ones that are important to the top.

This sometimes requires input from your managers as well. For example, your management team thinks being conservative on spending is a weakness but you don’t. That might be something to drop off the list.

Step Two: Look outward.
The next list you’ll need to make outlines your business’s opportunities and threats. Think of both as external to your business — factors that you can’t control but can try to predict. Opportunities can include new markets, new products and trends that favor your business. Threats include competition and advances in technology that put you at a disadvantage.

Also make a list of invented people or organizations who serve as ideal buyers or your ideal target market. You can consider each one a persona, such as a grandmother discovering email or a college student getting his or her first credit card. These people are iconic and ideal, and stand for the best possible buyer.

Put yourself in the place of each of these ideal buyers and then think about what media he or she uses and what message would communicate your offering most effectively. Keep your identity in the back of your mind as you flesh out your target markets.

Step Three: Focus on strategy. 
Now it’s time to pull your lists together. Look for the intersection of your unique identity and your target market. In terms of your business offerings, what could you drop off the list because it’s not strategic? Then think about dropping those who aren’t in your target market.

For example, a restaurant business focused on healthy, organic and fine dining would probably cater to people more in tune with green trends and with higher-than-average disposable income. So, it might rule out people who prefer eating fast-food like hamburgers and pizza, and who look for bargains.

The result of step three is strategy: Narrow your focus to what’s most in alignment with your identity and most attractive to your target market. In other words, focus on the area that is shared by all three lines in the diagram here.

Step Four: Set measurable steps.
Get down to the details that are concrete and measurable. Your marketing strategy should become a plan that includes monthly review, tracking and measurement, sales forecasts, expense budgets and non-monetary metrics for tracking progress. These can include leads, presentations, phone calls, links, blog posts, page views, conversion rates, proposals and trips, among others.

Match important tasks to people on your team and hold them accountable for their successes and failures.

Step Five: Review often and revise.
Just as with your business plan, your marketing plan should continue to evolve along with your business. Your assumptions will change, so adapt to the changing business landscape. Some parts of the plan also will work better than others, so review and revise to accommodate what you learn as you go.

Notice that ways to make money with a website are different from ways to make more money from it. Methods to increase your traffic or click-through rate will help you make more money, but they do not represent a method of making money per se.

For example, one could suggest that blending AdSense ads with the content is a way to make money from a website. In reality it’s not; it’s just a way to make more money by improving your ad click-through rate. The real monetisation method behind it is a PPC ad network.

Direct Methods

1. PPC Advertising Networks

Google AdSense is the most popular option under this category, but there are also others. Basically you need to sign up with the network and paste some code snippets on your website. The network will then serve contextual ads (either text or images) relevant to your website, and you will earn a certain amount of money for every click.

The profitability of PPC advertising depends on the general traffic levels of the website and, most importantly, on the click-through rate (CTR) and cost per click (CPC). The CTR depends on the design of the website. Ads placed abode the fold or blended with content, for instance, tend to get higher CTRs. The CPC, on the other hand, depends on the nice of the website. Mortgages, financial products and college education are examples of profitable niches (clicks worth a couple of dollars are not rare), while tech-related topics tend to receive a smaller CPC (sometimes as low as a couple of cents per click).

The source of the traffic can also affect the overall CTR rate. Organic traffic (the one that comes from search engines) tends to perform well because these visitors were already looking for something, and they tend to click on ads more often. Social media traffic, on the other hand, presents terribly low CTRs because these visitors are tech-savvy and they just ignore ads.

2. CPM Advertising Networks

CPM advertising networks behave pretty much as PPC networks, except that you get paid according to the number of impressions (i.e., page views) that the ads displayed on your site will generate. CPM stands for Cost per Mille, and it refers to the cost for 1,000 impressions.

A blog that generates 100,000 page views monthly displaying an advertising banner with a $1 CPM, therefore, will earn $100 monthly.

CPM rates vary with the network, the position of the ad and the format. The better the network, the higher the CPM rate (because they have access to more advertisers). The closer you put the ad to the top of the page, the higher the CPM. The bigger the format (in terms of pixels), the higher the CPM.

You can get as low as $0,10 and as high as $10 per 1,000 impressions (more in some special cases). CPM advertising tends to work well on websites with a high page views per visitor ratio (e.g., online forums, magazines and so on).

3. Direct Banner Advertising

Selling your own advertising space is one of the most lucrative monetization methods. First and foremost because it enables you to cut out the middleman commissions and to determine your own rates. The most popular banner formats on the web are the 728×90 leaderboard, the 120×600 skyscraper, the 300×250 rectangle and the 125×125 button.

The downside of direct banner advertising is that you need to have a big audience to get qualified advertisers, and you will need to spend time managing the sales process, the banners and the payments.

4. Text Link Ads

After Google declared that sites selling text links without the nofollow tag would be penalized, this monetization method became less popular.

Many website owners are still using text links to monetize their sites, though, some using the nofollow tag and some not.

The advantage of this method is that it is not intrusive. One can sell text links directly through his website or use specialized networks like Text-Link-Ads and Text-Link-Brokers to automate the process.

5. Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing is a very popular practice on the Internet. Under this system you have a merchant that is willing to let other people (the affiliates) sell directly or indirectly its products and services, in exchange for a commission. Sometimes this type of advertising is also called CPA (cost per action) or CPL (cost per lead) based.

Affiliates can send potential customers to the merchant using several tools, from banners to text links and product reviews.

6. Monetisation Widgets

The latest trend on the web are widgets that let you monetize your website. Examples include Widgetbucks and SmartLinks. Some of these services operate under a PPC scheme, others behave like text link ads, others yet leverage affiliate links.

Their main differentiator, however, is the fact that they work as web widgets, making it easier for the user to plug and play the service on its website.

7. Sponsored Reviews

PayPerPost pioneered this model, with much controversy on the beginning (related to the fact that they did not require disclosure on paid posts). Soon other companies followed, most notably Sponsored Reviews and ReviewMe, refining the process and expanding the paid blogging model.

Joining one of these sponsored reviews marketplaces will give you the opportunity to write sponsored posts on a wide range of topics. Not all bloggers are willing to get paid to write about a specific product or website (because it might compromise the editorial credibility), but the ones who do are making good money out of it.

If your blog has a big audience you could also offer sponsored reviews directly, cutting off the commissions of the middleman.

8. RSS Feed Ads

With the quick adoption of the RSS technology by millions of Internet users, website owners are starting to find ways to monetize this new content distribution channel.

Feedburber already has its own publisher network, and you can sign-up to start displaying CPM based advertising on your feed footer. Bidvertiser recently introduced a RSS feed ad option as well, with a PPC scheme.

Finally, some blogs are also opting to sell banners or sponsored messages on their feed directly. John Chow and Marketing Pilgrim are two examples.

9. Sponsors for Single Columns or Events

If you website has specific columns or events (e.g., a weekly podcast, an interview series, a monthly survey, a special project) you could find companies to sponsor them individually.

This method increases the monetization options for website owner, while giving advertisers the possibility to target a more specific audience and with a reduced commitment.

Mashable illustrates the case well. They have several advertising options on the site, including the possibility to sponsor specific columns and articles, including the “Daily Poll” and the “Web 2.0 Invites.”

Problogger also runs group writing projects occasionally, and before proceeding he publicly announce the project asking for sponsors.

10.Premium Content

Some websites and blogs give away part of their content for free, and charge for access to the premium content and exclusive tools.

SEOMoz is a good example. They have a very popular blog that gives advice and information on wide range of SEO related topics. On top of that visitors can decide to become premium members. It costs $48 monthly and it grants them access to guides, tools and other exclusive material.

11. Private Forums

While the Internet is populated with free forums, there is also the possibility to create a private one where members need to pay a single or recurring fee to join.

SEO Blackhat charges $100 monthly from its members, and they have thousands of them. Obviously in order to charge such a price for a forum membership you need to provide real value for the members (e.g., secret techniques, tools, and so on).

Performancing also launched a private forum recently, focused on the networking aspect. It is called The Hive, and the monthly cost is $10.

These are just two examples. There are many possibilities to create a private and profitable forum, you just need to find an appealing angle that will make it worth for the members.

12. Job Boards

All the popular blogs are trying to leverage job boards to make some extra income. Guy Kawasaki, ReadWriteWeb, Problogger… you name it.

The advantage of this method is that it is passive. Once you have the structure in place, the job listings will come naturally, and you can charge anywhere from $10 up to $100 for each.

13. Marketplaces

Sitepoint is the online marketplace by excellence. Some websites and blogs, however, are trying to replicate that model on a smaller scale.

Depending on your niche, a market place that allows your visitors to buy, sell and trade products could work well. Over the time you could start charging a small fee for new product listings.

The problem with this method is that there are no standard software on the web, so you would need to hire a coder to get a marketplace integrated into your website.

14. Paid Surveys and Polls

There are services that will pay you money to run a small survey or poll on your website. The most popular one is called Vizu Answers.

Basically you need to sign up with them, and select the kind of polls that you want to run your site. Most of these services operate under a CPM model.

15. Selling or Renting Internal Pages

Million Dollar Wiki made this concept popular, but it was being used on the web for a long time around (check Pagerank10.co.uk for instance).

These websites sell for a single fee or rent for a recurring fee internal pages on their domain. Usually they have either high Pagerak or high traffic, so that people purchasing a page will be able to benefit in some way.

Implementing this method on a small blog would be difficult, but the concept is interesting and could be explored further.

16. Highlighted Posts from Sponsors

Techmeme probably pioneered this idea, but somehow it has not spread to other websites. The tech news aggregator displays editorial posts on the left column, and on the sidebar they have a section titled “Techmeme Sponsor Posts.”

On that section posts from the blog of the advertisers get highlighted, sending qualified traffic their way. Considering that the monthly cost for one spot is $5000 and that they have around 6 sponsors at any given time, it must be working well.

17. Donations

Placing a “Donate” link or button on a website can be an efficient way to earn money, especially if your blog is on a niche where readers learn and gain value from your content.

Personal development and productivity blogs, for instance, tend to perform well with donation based systems (one good example being Steve Pavlina).

A small variation of this method appeared sometime ago with the Buy Me a Beer plugin. This WordPress plugin enables you to insert a customized message at the bottom of each article, asking the readers to chip in for a beer or coffee.

18. In-text Adverting

In-text adverting networks like Kontera and Vibrant Media will place sponsored links inside your text. These links come with a double underline to differentiate them from normal links, and once the user rolls the mouse over the link the advertising will pop. Should the user click on it the site owner will make some money.

Some people make good money with this method, but others refrain from using it due to its intrusiveness. It is also interesting to note that very few mainstream websites have experimented with in-text advertising.

19. Pop-ups and Pop-unders

Pop-ups are a common yet annoying form of advertising on the Internet. If you are just trying to make a much money as possible from your website, you could experiment with them.

If you are trying to grow the traffic and generate loyal visitors, however, you probably should stay away from them. Just consider the hundreds of pop-up blockers out there: there is a reason why they are so popular.

20. Audio Ads

Also called PPP (Pay Per Play), this advertising method was introduce by Net Audio Ads. the concept is pretty simple: play a small audio advertising (usually 5 seconds) every time a visitor enters into your website. The user should not be able to stop it, creating a 100% conversion rate based on unique visitors.

The company is still rolling tests, but some users are reporting to get from a $4 to a $6 CPM. Regardless of the pay rate, though, this is a very intrusive form of advertising, so think twice before using it.

21. Selling the Website

Selling your website could be your last resource, but it has the potential to generate a big sum of money in a short period of time.

Market places on online forums like DigitalPoint and Sitepoint are always active with website buyers and sellers. Keep in mind that they most used parameter to determine the value of a website is the monthly revenue that it generates, multiplied by a certain number (the multiplier can be anything from 5 to 30, depending on the expectations of the seller, on the quality of the site, on the niche and other factors).

Some people also make money trading and flipping websites. They either create them from scratch or buy existing ones, and after some revamping they sell them for a profit.

Perhaps one of the oldest money making strategies on the web, using a website to promote a related ebook is a very efficient way to generate revenue.

You could either structure the website around the book itself, likeSEOBook.com, or launch the ebook based on the success of the website, like FreelanceSwitch did we the book How to be a Rockstar Freelancer.

23. Selling a Hardcover Book

Depending on your niche, you could make money by offering consulting and related services. If you are also the author of your blog, the articles and information that you will share will build your profile and possibly certify your expertise on that niche, making it easier to gain customers.

Chris Garrett used a similar strategy. First he created a highly influential blog on the blogging and new media niche, and afterwards he started offering consulting services to clients with related problems and needs.

26. Creating an Email List or Newsletter

Email lists and newsletters represent one of the most powerful marketing and money making tools on the Internet. They offer incredible conversion rates, and the possibility to call people to action in a very efficient way.

Creating a big list is a difficult task though, so if you have a popular website you could leverage it to increase the number of subscribers on your list.

Yaro Starak is a famous Internet marketer, and if you visit his blog you will notice that right on top he has a section encouraging visitors to subscribe to his email newsletter. Yaro generates five figures in revenues each month from his email newsletters, proving that this method works.

Creating a mentoring program related to the niche of your website could be very profitable if you manage to structure and promote it adequately. There is a wide range of media and tools that you can use to deliver the information, from text articles to audio and video lessons.

Brian Clark leveraged the success of Copyblogger to launch a mentoring program teaching people how to build membership and how to sell content online. The program is titled Teaching Sells, and it costs $97 monthly. Sounds expensive, but they have over 1,000 members.

28. Creating a conference around the website

If your website takes off and becomes an authority on its niche, you could create a conference around it. Depending on the size of your audience, the event could attract thousands of people, and you could make money directly from conference passes and sponsors.

Search Engine Land, for instance, created a series of conferences that visit several cities on the United States and on other countries as well. The conferences are called Search Marketing Expo, and the tickets and passes cost thousands of dollars.

AdSense is an advertising program offered by Google, it allows you to easily add Ads by Google anywhere onto your website. AdSense is a great way for many Website Owners to generate a constant passive income from their website. AdSense displays ads on your website that are related to the content on that page, this makes visitors more likely to click on those ads.

How it Works

Once you have signed up with Google AdSense and have been approved you will be able to create “Ads”, you will then be given code to display that ad on your website. When you place the code for your AdSense ad into a page on your website Google will crawl that page and from the content determine what ads are related to your content, than only shows those ads on that page. Every time someone clicks on one of those ads you will receive a small commission, the amount varies.

The ads for AdSense are provided by Google Adwords, this is a program where people pay to get there ads shown through the network of Google AdSense. Adwords is used to drive traffic to a certain page that usually sells something, there will be more information on Adwords later in the Building Traffic section.

How much does it cost and how much can you make?

The great thing about AdSense is “It’s Free”, you never have to pay anything to use it, and you can only make money with AdSense. Now the question is how much money can you make with AdSense? This is one question with an answer that can change vary dramatically, simply put “it depends” nice answer I know, it explains it all. You won’t really know how much you can make with AdSense until you use it, the amount you make will change depending on things like; Topic, CTR (Click through rate), what you earn each click (can change a lot), the amount of traffic (visitors) you get, ad placement, etc. Basically you can say that the amount you make will scale with the amount of traffic you get. On average you can get between 5pence per click all the way up to a few dollars per click, this depends a lot on the topic and content of your website.

You can work out a very rough estimate by using this formula, I made it myself quickly so it’s really rough; (Traffic x CTR) x CPC. Now Traffic is how much visitors you get a day, you should know this one, CTR is the click through rate (usually around 1-3% varies a bit, some sites may get higher) use it as a decimal percentage so 2% would be 0.02, and CPC is the amount you get for each click, this changes a lot but for a rough estimation 20 cents is a good value to use.

Should you use AdSense?

Personally I think most content websites should use AdSense as it is a passive income and easy money. On the other hand for those of you that are making sites to sell products should probably steer away from adding AdSense to their sales pages, that’s just greedy and you will find you get less sales of your actual product. I’d say it’s ok to put AdSense on other pages that you have decent content on but not on sales pages, also Google doesn’t like their ads being placed on pages with little or no content. If someone was to click on an ad on your sales page then you are sending your potential buyers to other sites to buy something.

Potential of AdSense

Now I know I said it was hard to say how much you can earn with AdSense, which it is, but it’s easier to tell you the potential of AdSense. First I would like to say that not everyone will make much money with AdSense and again it depends heavily on how much Traffic you get. With that said AdSense can earn some people a lot of money, a very small amount of people have been able to earn tens of thousands of dollars every month from AdSense. However the average high earner is capable of earning thousands a month.
